SQUIRRELS
SQUIRRELS - LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK
The squirrel family is comprised of a large group that includes gray squirrels, flying squirrels, chipmunks, and groundhogs who inhabit Long Island, New York. Eastern Gray Squirrels are diurnal tree squirrels, and Southern Flying Squirrels are nocturnal rodents. The Eastern Gray Squirrel is native to the eastern and midwestern United States and to the southern areas of the central providences of Canada. There is also a black squirrel, a melanistic subgroup of the Eastern Gray Squirrel. The phenomenon occurs in several species of squirrels but is most frequently seen in Eastern Gray Squirrels. Black squirrels are Eastern Gray Squirrels with a genetic mutation that prevents their fur from turning gray. It is hypothesized that this genetic mutation may boost the squirrel's immune system, making it more disease-resistant. Squirrels with black fur have a considerably higher cold tolerance than squirrels with gray fur. Eastern Gray Squirrels build nests at least twenty feet above the ground in the forks and hollows of trees, consisting primarily of leaves and twigs. They also nest in attics of Long Island homes, where they are considered to be pests and a fire hazard because they gnaw on electrical wires. The Eastern Gray Squirrels mate twice a year and give birth to litters in the Spring and Fall that generally range in size from four to eight young. Adult gray squirrels have a life expectancy of six years in the wild. The diet of the gray squirrel includes an assortment of nuts, seeds, and berries. During the Spring, gray squirrels will also consume the buds of tulip poplar, maple, black cherry, and flowering dogwood trees. When their usual food is in short supply, Eastern Gray Squirrels will also eat insects, amphibians, bird eggs, and baby birds.
SQUIRRELS: SENSES AND INTELLIGENCE
Squirrels have better eyesight than other diurnal rodents and possess exceptional peripheral vision, making it difficult for predators to sneak up on them. Tree squirrels have a pale yellow pigment in their eyes, which reduces sunlight glare and protects the eyes' retina from ultraviolet light. Squirrels have excellent hearing and can hear sounds over a range of frequencies roughly two and a half times greater than humans. Squirrels depend on their superb sense of smell to find food and retrieve caches of buried nuts. Scent plays a vital role in the social structure of squirrels. Gray squirrels have two scent-marking tools, urine and scent glands in the skin around their mouths that they use to mark their territory. They frequently urinate as they navigate their travel paths and often stop and rub their oral scent glands on the bark of trees. Male squirrels can find females in oestrus via scent-marked trees. Squirrels possess hairs called vibrissae on their bodies that are sensitive to tactile impulses and allow them to detect objects in their surroundings. The whiskers arranged in five parallel rows on either side of the squirrel's nose are vibrissae. The squirrel's head is also equipped with smaller vibrissae around the eyes, cheeks, ears, and on the underside of the chin. Squirrels also have short vibrissae on their undersides in their white belly fur, wrists, elbows, feet, and at the base of their tails.
Eastern Gray Squirrels are very intelligent, highly adaptable, and capable of living almost anywhere, making them pests in many areas. Memory and abstract thought are two measures of intelligence that squirrels have proven capable of. Tree-dwelling squirrels have evolved larger brains than their burrowing counterparts. In the Fall, tree squirrels gather and store as many nuts as possible before the snow falls and the weather gets cold. The brains of male tree squirrels increase in size in the Fall. Specifically, the hippocampus, the brain area responsible for memory and spatial organization, increases in size by fifteen percent. The increase in the size of the hippocampus helps them recall where most of the hundreds or thousands of nuts they scatter-hoarded are located.

SIGNS OF SQUIRRELS
Squirrel Sounds - Noises in the attic during the day may be from squirrels that have taken up residence in your Nassau County home. If you hear scurrying or scratching sounds during the day, there is a good chance you have squirrels in the attic.
Squirrel Footprints - Can be seen on snow-covered grounds and in dust-covered attics that squirrels inhabit. The hind footprints have five toes, roughly 2 to 2 1/2 inches long. The front footprints are four-toed and 1 1/4 to 1 3/4 inches long.
Squirrel Droppings - These are generally 3/8 inch long and cylindrical with rounded edges. In attics inhabited by squirrels, their excrement may appear in clusters of pellets in the insulation.
Squirrel Damage - Squirrels will gnaw round holes about the size of a baseball in fascia boards and soffits to enter the attics of Nassau County residences. Squirrels in the attic of your home will gnaw on wooden beams, PVC pipes, ceilings, central air conditioning ductwork, cables, and electrical wires, potentially resulting in a fire. Squirrels will also live under solar panels, where they will gnaw through wires and damage the panels. If you have solar panels on the roof of your Long Island home or are planning on installing them, make sure that your solar panel provider also installs solar panel squirrel guards. Squirrel guards, which are also known as critter guards, will protect your solar panels from squirrels and pigeons and prevent them from constructing nests beneath the panels. Installing critter guards on your home's solar panels will also serve to avert the build-up of debris, such as leaves, underneath the panels.
HOW TO GET RID OF SQUIRRELS NASSAU COUNTY, NEW YORK
Squirrel Repellents - Numerous rodent control products that guarantee a quick-fix solution to your pest control issue can be purchased on the internet and in neighborhood hardware stores. None of the rodent control repellent products available to the public are effective in getting rid of squirrels.
One-Way Doors - These are installed over the squirrel's point of entry into your residence or business. This gadget allows the squirrels to exit an attic for food or water but prevents their re-entry. The problem with using one-way doors to get rid of squirrels is that ninety percent of the time, a squirrel in an attic is a female with offspring. In this scenario, a one-way door would only serve to separate a mother squirrel from her pups, resulting in the squirrel doing more damage to the roof or soffit in her attempt to get to her young. The squirrel pups in the attic or soffits will starve and die in their mother's absence. Although manufacturers of one-way doors claim that this gadget is a humane wildlife removal device, it is probably best not to use them to remove squirrels from an attic.
